Clare Collins

Trainee Patent Attorney

Clare joined the IT & Engineering team at Mathys & Squire in 2017 after finishing her PhD. She has a broad technical background in the physical sciences, specifically in the areas of physics, materials science and electrical engineering.

Clare specialises in patent work in the physics, electrical engineering and materials science sectors. She handles a wide range of patent matters in these fields, and also in relation to computer software. She has technical experience of ultrafast lasers, and surface measuring techniques including scanning electron microscopy, coordinate measuring machines, optical microscopes and interferometry.


Clare graduated from King’s College London with an MSci in Physics. She then moved to the University of Cambridge, completing an MRes in Ultra Precision Engineering and a PhD in Engineering. In her doctoral research, Clare studied field electron emission from nanomaterials, in particular carbon nanotubes. She fabricated and tested her own carbon nanotube devices, which have potential application in the generation of X-rays.
