Robin joined the Mathys & Squire trade marks team in 2020, and is based in our Manchester office. He is a South African qualified commercial and trade mark attorney, practising in the United Kingdom. He is also a solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales. He holds a bachelor of social sciences and a bachelor of laws from the University of Cape Town, as well as a master’s of law jointly from the University of Cape Town and Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada. Robin is a fellow of the South African Institute of Intellectual Property (IP) Law and a South African-qualified trade mark practitioner. He has a passion for solving domain name, trade mark, copyright and internet-based legal issues.
Expertise
Robin has over seven years of experience in trade mark, domain name and copyright protection and has worked with clients ranging from large multinationals through to new-formed startups. Robin has filed and prosecuted trade mark applications in the UK, EU, Africa and several other jurisdictions throughout the world.
Robin has managed and assisted in contentious proceedings in Africa, the US, UK and EU involving trade mark oppositions and infringements, company name objections, domain name disputes, copyright infringements and social media enforcements. Robin is an accredited domain name adjudicator with the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law and adjudicated a number of disputes before moving to the UK.
Academic
Robin obtained a B.SocSci and L.LB (Law) in 2008 and 2011 from the University of Cape Town. He then went on to obtain a masters of law, specialising in IP law, from Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada and the University of Cape Town in 2013, where his thesis focused on the use of alternative dispute resolution procedures in patent litigation.
Upon entering practice in South Africa, Robin was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa and successfully completed an intensive professional qualification as a trade mark practitioner with the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law.
Robin is also a solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales.
