Mohammed Shafi
BSc, MSc

BSc, MSc

Mohammed is a Technical Assistant in the Life Sciences & Chemistry team. He joined the firm from University College London (UCL) following completion of his MSc, where he developed significant experience in the design and manufacture of cell and gene therapies.
In addition to his role as a Technical Assistant, Mohammed contributes to Mathys & Squire Consulting as an IP Consultant, advising on IP commercialisation and technology transfer. His work includes the valuation of IP assets across a range technical domains.
Expertise
Mohammed’s work focuses on life sciences, with particular experience in advanced therapies and bioprocess engineering. Since beginning his training at Mathys & Squire, he has gained experience in patent drafting, prosecution and opposition proceedings at the European Patent Office (EPO).
Academic
Mohammed obtained his MSc from University College London, where his research focused on developing a novel protocol for the culture and expansion of primary Natural Killer (NK) cells for application in CAR-NK therapies. This work involved the optimisation of cytokine-driven activation systems, media composition, and culture conditions to enhance NK cell proliferation, viability, and cytotoxic function. His research also considered key translational challenges, including scalability, reproducibility, and process robustness in the context of advanced therapy manufacturing.
During his BSc, Mohammed’s dissertation investigated the application of next-generation DNA sequencing technologies to identify genetic variants associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death. This work involved analysing the clinical utility and limitations of genomic screening approaches, with particular focus on variant interpretation, sensitivity of detection, and integration into diagnostic workflows.
