UK & European Patent Attorney
BA, PhD, DIC, MPhil, CPA, EPA

Richard has a broad interdisciplinary background spanning information technology and the physical sciences. This breadth results in a diverse client base, ranging from individual inventors, start-ups and universities through to SMEs and multinationals.
Expertise
Drawing on two decades of patent experience, Richard often advises on issues beyond the day-to-day drafting, filing and prosecuting of patent applications, including: identifying patenting opportunities and landscaping of technology areas; advising on IP ownership, licensing and other agreement issues; building and managing patent portfolios; analysing competitors through their patenting and commercial activity; assessing infringement risk; preparing due diligence reports; and defending and asserting clients’ IP rights, as well as challenging those of competitors.
Richard works with clients directly throughout the patenting process, often being the first port of call for companies and inventors navigating patenting and IP strategy for the first time.
In a return to earlier interests, Richard also contributes published commentary and analysis on patent strategy in emerging technology sectors, examining how companies use IP to build competitive positions, and what shifting patent landscapes reveal about where technologies and industries are heading.
Academic
Richard holds a degree in Natural Sciences (Physics) from the University of Cambridge, and a PhD in semiconductor physics from Imperial College London. After several years working as an IT professional, Richard returned to Cambridge for an MPhil in Technology Policy at the Judge Business School before entering the patent profession.
