UK & European Patent Attorney
BSc (Hons), PhD, CPA, EPA
Rachael joined Mathys & Squire in 2018 following completion of her PhD at the University of York. She is an Associate in the life sciences team and has a broad technical background in biological sciences, particularly in the areas of microbiology, immunology, and biotechnology.
Expertise
Rachael has experience in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications across a range of technical areas, including diagnostics, therapeutics, nucleic-acid based technologies, and bio-based materials. Rachael works with a range of clients including startups, SMEs, universities, and large corporations, and is involved in the prosecution of both UK and European patent applications, as well as the management of global patent families.
Academic
Rachael has a PhD in mechanistic biology from the University of York, during which she also spent time at the University of Sheffield. Her PhD research focused on the functionality of microbial communities and their industrial applications, and involved a wide range of microbiology based techniques, large scale experimental evolution, whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics.
Prior to her PhD, Rachael graduated from the University of Dundee with a first class honours degree in microbiology. During her time in Dundee, Rachael competed in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition where she helped to develop a strain of E. coli that was designed to target and kill C. difficile. During her honours project research, Rachael studied bacterial export pathways which helped her to develop a good working knowledge of microbiology, synthetic biology and biochemistry.
Research from both Rachael’s PhD and honours project has been published in high impact factor journals.
Memberships and Organisations
Rachael is a member of the European Patent Institute (EPI) and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA).
