Oliver is a Managing Associate in Mathys & Squire’s IT & engineering team. Oliver works with a wide range of clients including large corporations and SMEs as well as universities, startups and individual inventors, primarily drafting and prosecuting UK and European patent applications and managing international patent portfolios. Oliver also has experience in wider strategic and contentious matters, having advised clients in respect of disputes regarding the infringement and validity of patents and registered designs, as well as patent licensing, IP due diligence, and freedom to operate. Oliver has been recommended in the 2026 edition of The Legal 500 for his ‘excellent technical knowledge’.
Expertise
Oliver works across a range of technologies in the fields of physics, engineering and software. Oliver’s recent work encompasses various quantum computing technologies, particularly optical quantum computing circuits and componentry and quantum information processing algorithms, as well as hydrogen and battery technologies and other environmental innovations. In addition, Oliver’s experience covers a broad spectrum of engineering technologies, including civil engineering such as automated construction and bridges, aerospace engineering such as VTOL jets and avionics, electrical engineering, and sports engineering. Oliver also has significant experience in software inventions, particularly in procuring patent protection in some of the most challenging areas such as business process and fintech inventions.
Academic
Oliver graduated from the University of Warwick with a first class master’s degree in physics. His degree covered a broad range of topics including quantum mechanics and electrodynamics, geophysics, medical physics, optoelectronics, lasers, and semiconductor devices. During his final year research project, Oliver investigated the effect of substitutional doping on the crystal structure and intrinsic magnetic properties of rare earth transition metal magnets.
Oliver also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary University of London.
