Max is a European and Chartered patent attorney with experience in drafting and prosecuting patent application in a variety of fields, in particular computer-implemented (software) inventions and engineering-related fields. He also specialises in work related to registered designs. Max has been ranked in Managing IP’s IP STARS legal directory – a publication recognising the best up-and-coming IP practitioners.
Expertise
Max works primarily on patent drafting, prosecution, and contentious matters across a wide variety of technical fields. He has substantial experience in working on matters related to patent infringement and validity and in opposition proceedings at the European Patent Office (EPO), as well as in advising on technology-based agreements.
Max works on a large international patent portfolio related to supercomputing and applications of artificial intelligence (AI) methods, and another large international patent portfolio related to small household appliances. His practice also focuses on work with several companies in ‘cleantech’ and renewable engineering-related fields. He also works in the fields of civil engineering, medical devices, robotics, device detection, internet television, communication technology, and business process inventions, among others.
Max enjoys guiding startup and scaleup businesses through the process of protecting their innovations and obtaining valuable patents which support commercial objectives, but equally enjoys supporting multinational businesses on major contentious work. Alongside his patent work, Max is a specialist in registered design law and regularly publishes articles on the subject. He works on registered design preparation, prosecution, infringement and validity proceedings, and freedom to operate analysis in the UK, EU and various other jurisdictions.
Academic
Max has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Cambridge, where he studied a broad-based course. He has particular academic experience in microsystems. His master’s thesis, which was published in an academic journal, related to the production of YBCO bulk superconductors. He holds a Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary, University of London, and is a qualified European and UK Patent Attorney.
