Lionel is an Associate in our life sciences team. He holds a master’s degree in biotechnology, as well as a PhD in molecular biology. He works on a wide variety of technical subjects, specialising in the fields of biotechnology, biochemistry and life sciences. Lionel acts for UK and overseas biotechnology and pharmaceutical clients and academic institutions in patent matters including patent drafting and international prosecution.

Lionel works in the field of biotechnology and biochemistry and has experience with antibody technology, phage display, transgenics, advanced light microscopy and many other techniques associated with molecular biology. He has worked in technology transfer within a university environment, having spent time at a large university-based technology transfer and commercialisation company in London.

Lionel gained a first class bachelor’s degree in biotechnology at the National University of Ireland, Galway where he ranked top in his year. He went on to receive a MSc with distinction in medical biotechnology from the University of Aberdeen, during which time he completed research and development work within a biotechnology spinout company. He then went on to undertake a PhD in molecular biology at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (jointly with the University of Heidelberg), focusing on extracellular signalling during embryonic development. He has spoken at leading international conferences and published work in internationally recognised journals.

Lionel is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA).
