William is a Chartered UK Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in the IT & engineering team at Mathys & Squire. He joined the firm in 2019 after graduating with a first class master’s degree in engineering science.
Expertise
William’s work covers all engineering, physics and IT sectors, with particular focus on medical devices, medical software, AI, telecoms and mechanical engineering inventions. William is skilled in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the UK and Europe, and handles international patent portfolios and advises on wider IP strategy for a range of clients.
William also has significant experience advising on the patentability of AI and software-based inventions, as well as providing strategic analysis of competitor IP portfolios, freedom to operate (FTO), and patent infringement and validity. He regularly engages with startup communities and other small business ecosystems, and frequently provides IP advice to support his clients through investment rounds, valuations, due diligence and audit processes.
Academic
William holds an undergraduate master’s degree in engineering science (MEng) from the University of Oxford. His degree provided him with a strong technical background in the major engineering disciplines, including mechanical engineering, materials, electronics, control theory, aerodynamics, biomedical engineering, and software. His master’s research project developed deep learning image analysis techniques to create an assistive clinical tool for predicting invasive breast cancer from histological images.
