Daniel is an Associate in the IT & engineering team. He joined Mathys & Squire in 2023 after working at another UK firm for five years. In addition to his experience in drafting and prosecuting patents applications, Daniel has advised clients on preparing design applications and devising international filing strategies.
Expertise
Daniel is experienced in drafting and prosecuting UK and European patent applications, as well as providing freedom to operate (FTO) advice and helping clients to perform due diligence on intellectual property (IP) portfolios. He has also been involved in successfully defending patents that have been opposed before the European Patent Office.
Daniel has worked with clients from a broad range of engineering sectors including medical devices, robotics, laboratory equipment, and marine, aerospace and automotive systems. In addition to his patent work, Daniel has extensive experience in preparing UK design applications and prosecuting them through to registration. He is also well versed in obtaining US design patents and dealing with the inconsistencies between US and European designs practice.
Academic
Daniel graduated from the University of Cambridge with a master’s degree in natural sciences, specialising in materials science. His final year project involved developing nanocomposite coatings for micro electro-mechanical systems. Daniel also completed a research placement at the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research in Düsseldorf. He was awarded a prize by the Armourers and Brasiers Company for his published work on polymer-electrolyte-membrane fuel cells.

Daniel is a member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) and of the European Patent Institute (EPI). He is also an alumnus of the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers.
