Alex joined the life sciences team at Mathys & Squire after completing a PhD and postdoctoral research fellowship. He has experience in European prosecution, opposition and appeal work, as well as in the management of European patent portfolios.

Alex works primarily in the field of biotechnology and molecular biology, and areas of expertise include gene editing, antibody technology, cellular therapies and vaccines. Alex previously spent five years as a postdoctoral research associate at Newcastle University working in cancer research. His work involved understanding the development of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, with a particular focus on the involvement of cancer stem cells.

Having graduated with a master’s degree in natural sciences, specialising in biochemistry, from the University of Cambridge, Alex went on to do a PhD at Queen Mary University which focused on understanding the role of polycomb group epigenetic regulators in liver development.

He also holds a Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from the University of London.

Alex is a fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA).
