Andrew is an Associate in the IT & engineering team at Mathys & Squire. He joined after qualification in 2022, having previously worked at another large pan-European intellectual property (IP) firm. He has experience in drafting and prosecuting UK and European patent applications, covering a wide range of technologies.
Expertise
Andrew has experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications for clients ranging from multinational corporations to SMEs. In addition to his significant experience in the prosecution of patents relating to telecommunications and semiconductor technology, he has also worked on cases relating to smart elastics, agricultural technology, flow batteries, medical devices and neural networks.He also has experience in wider strategic matters, having advised clients on infringement and validity concerns, performed freedom to operate searches and reviewed patent portfolios.
Andrew also spent six months working in Beijing while training as a patent attorney, where he developed a strong understanding of Chinese business culture and enhanced his knowledge of how to cater for the needs of international clients.
Academic
Andrew holds a master’s degree in physics with astrophysics (MPhys) from the University of Manchester. His master’s research project focused on the study of anomalous microwave emission (AME) and involved the use of satellite data to map AME across a range of frequencies, compare it to known emission mechanisms and speculate on its origins.
After graduation, Andrew was awarded a British Council scholarship to study Chinese in Tianjin, China. Having spent a full academic year there, he now speaks Chinese to a high level.
Andrew also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary University of London.

Andrew is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) and a member of the European Patent Institute (EPI).
