Svilen joined Mathys & Squire in 2012.  He has experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the UK and overseas in fields ranging from optics, electronics, mechanics and computing. He is a native Bulgarian speaker.

Expertise

Svilen has experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the UK in fields ranging from optics, electronics, mechanics and computing. In addition, he has experience performing infringement risk analysis and patent searches, in particular large “patent landscaping” projects. Svilen has worked with a number of UK clients, ranging from start-ups to large multinational corporations, for whom he has also conducted work exploring patent box strategies. In addition to his UK work, Svilen has also conducted a number of overseas patent filings campaigns, as well as successfully prosecuting to grant many of these filings. A particular further area of focus in Svilen’s work is preparing, filing and prosecuting Registered Designs in the Community as well as in many overseas jurisdictions. Svilen’s Master’s project concerned the construction of super-resolution and optical sectioning microscopes operating on the principles of structured illumination. He also worked in the areas of holography and electro-optical modulation for optical communication.

Academic

Svilen studied at the University of Durham for a Master’s degree in Physics, during the course of which he specialised in optics.

Recent Work

Most recently, his work has been orientated to help manage the large patent and Registered Design portfolio of a large multinational corporation in the field of domestic electric appliances.
