Samantha Blackham

Sam joined Mathys & Squire in 2011 and qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2015. She has experience in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications in the UK, Europe and worldwide and works primarily in the fields of molecular biology and biotechnology. Sam has an honours degree in biochemistry and a PhD in molecular virology from Imperial College London.

Expertise

Samantha has experience in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications in the UK, Europe and worldwide, particularly in the fields of molecular biology and biotechnology. She has also been involved in patent prosecution, opposition and appeal work before the European Patent Office, as well as in the management of European patent portfolios. After completing her degree, Samantha worked as a research scientist in the pharmaceutical industry for two years, developing therapeutic antibodies for use in the treatment of cancer and immune system disorders. She works primarily in the fields of molecular biology and biotechnology, and has particular experience in vaccines, cytokine and antibody-based therapeutics, nucleic acid-based diagnostics and array technologies and modified and thermostable enzymes.

Academic

Samantha has an honours degree in biochemistry and a PhD in molecular virology from Imperial College London. Her PhD focussed on the identification of host factors involved in the Hepatitis C virus replication cycle through the use of microarray expression profiling and siRNA silencing techniques. Her PhD research was the subject of several international presentations and was published in the Journal of Virology.
